Chad lies in West Africa's interior with Sudan on its eastern border and Niger to the west. Its north lies in the Sahara Desert and is subsequently very hot and dry with minimal rain. Further south, in the Sahel region, there is a rainy season during the period of high sun from May to September.

The rains bring a change in wind direction, blowing in from the southwest laden with moist air from the South Atlantic.
