Tanzania weather overview
Tanzania is the biggest country in East Africa, ranging from low coast to hilly districts and high mountains. Its highest point, Mount Kilimanjaro, has permanent snow cover but elsewhere a tropical climate prevails, bringing high temperatures and intense humidity, especially on the coast.
In the high plateau above 3,000m (10,000ft), temperatures and humidity are far more moderate, and nights are frequently chilly. The main rainy season is from November to May, and rainfall is heaviest in the high mountains and along the coast (particularly between March and May).
Inland, the most reliable rainfall occurs in the regions around East Africa's great lakes - Victoria, Malawi and Tanganyika. June to October is the driest, sunniest period and therefore the best time to visit.
What to pack for Tanzania weather
The higher you go in Tanzania, the lower the temperature, especially at night, so take warm clothes if you are planning a trip to the highlands. On the coast, light clothing is fine, and be prepared for showers at any time.
