Venezuela weather overview
In the north of Venezuela, there is a long narrow Caribbean coastal plain rising up to the Andes Mountains. The central plains (known as the Llanos) follow the valleys of the Orinoco river and, to the southeast, the land rises to an extensive plateau, the Guyana Highlands. Venezuela is unusual amongst South American countries in that its main rainy season falls between April and October.
In the Llanos region, however, you should go prepared for downpours at any time of year when high temperatures and humidity make conditions muggy and oppressive. The northern slopes of the Andes and Venezuela's north-eastern coastal lowlands are the driest parts of the country. On the high peaks of the Andes, rain falls as snow and temperatures can be very cold, especially at night.
In the south-eastern highlands rainfall is high during the wet season but temperatures are crisp and conditions delightful during the dry season. The best time to visit Venezuela is from January to April when rainfall is at its lowest in all parts of the country.
What to pack for Venezuela weather
Pack light cotton clothes for the coast and the Llanos Region; add warm to heavy clothing if planning to visit the hill districts or go up into the Andes. Take rainwear from April to October.
