Mauritania weather overview

Mauritania is a large country in Africa at the western extent of the Sahara Desert on the Atlantic coast opposite the Cape Verde islands. From June to October, West African monsoon winds sweep damp air in from the Atlantic, bringing cloud, humidity and occasional rain to the south of Mauritania. During the rest of the year, heat and dust replace humidity in the south, as the Harmattan wind swoops down from the desert regions of the northeast.

Northern Mauritania is hot and dry throughout the year, though sporadic bouts of rainfall can occur at any time. Generally speaking, go expecting hot, stifling conditions, at their most humid on the coast - though here they are partially mitigated by sea breezes.

What to pack for Mauritania weather

Very light clothing is advisable with warm cover-ups for chillier desert evenings.
