Libya weather overview

Libya is a blend of searing desert heat and Mediterranean balminess. About 100 miles inland from the country's Mediterranean coast lies the central Sahara where some of the highest temperatures on earth have been recorded.

Between March and June, travellers to the more temperate Libyan coast should brace themselves for a visitor from the desert - a hot, dusty Sirocco wind known locally as the Ghibli. This sends temperatures soaring and can make life chokingly hot and unpleasant for a while.

Those going into the desert should also prepare for cold nights. From October to March, the Libyan coast can attract clouds and rain but the heaviest rainfall is in the hilly region of Jebel Akhdar.

What to pack for Libya weather

Pack light clothes for the coast, supplemented with scarves if you are travelling during Ghibli season. Take warm clothing for visiting the desert regions at night.
