Finland weather overview
Finland is a country of extremes with very harsh winters but warm, pleasant summers. The north of the country lies inside the Arctic Circle and this means summer days are not only sunny but long with an average of 10 hours of sunshine. However temperatures tend to be higher in the low-lying south. In winter, central and southern Finland enjoy relatively mild weather while the rest of the country shivers and dons its snow boots.
In the north, the winter snows can last up to seven months. One compensation for the cold winters is that they bring long bouts of settled weather. In the summer, the weather is very changeable and light rain always a possibility.
What to pack for Finland weather
Take very warm clothing in the winter months, especially if you plan to enter the Arctic Circle, light to warm clothing with rainwear for the summer and always pack insect repellent: gnats and mosquitoes are a pest, especially in the north.
