On the lower ground of Afghanistan's southwest and northwest borders, summers are very sunny, hot and dry with extremely high temperatures; along its southwest border with Iran, the heat is exacerbated by dusty desert winds.

Winters are severe with substantial rainfall from December to March. In the mountains, summers are sunny and warm, winters are harsh and the heaviest rainfall comes in spring.
