The Falkland Islands, which lie around 400 miles off the coast of South America, are largely low-lying. Cool currents from Antarctica keep the climate here temperate, and quite wet. Conditions are similar to those of the Shetland Islands off the coast of Scotland but winters are longer and colder, with frequent gales and snow storms.

Rainfall is high throughout the year and temperatures are cool to moderate, with sea breezes providing a chilly bite even on sunny days. Expect very changeable weather even in the summer months.
