Colombia weather overview

Colombia is a large country: it is twice the size of France and has a varied topography and climate to match. It contains part of the Andes mountain chain and has two coasts - one bordering the Pacific Ocean, the other the Caribbean Sea - as well as forested lowlands which form part of the Amazon Basin.

On the Pacific Coast and the lower Western slopes of the Andes, you should go prepared for downpours at any time of year. The good news is that most of the rain tumbles down at night but the bad news is that there are frequent afternoon thunderstorms and the overnight downpours do little to refresh the atmosphere which is hot and muggy throughout the year. The Caribbean coast is drier from December to March but be prepared for rain and humid conditions in the wet season which stretches from April to November.

Most of the country's interior is mountainous and temperatures drop lower the higher up you go: the tallest peaks are covered in snow for much of the year. In the middle altitudes (where you'll find Bogota), conditions are pleasant and temperate. Here you'll find a climate of perpetual spring where days are warm but never too hot and nights, although cool, are never cold and frosty.

However, even here you won't escape the rain: it falls at any time of the year but is heavier on the western ranges than in the east. Prepare for even more rain if you visit the equatorial lowlands of the Amazon Basin.
