What is the weather in Switzerland in November like?
In Switzerland, November is a month when autumn lingers in some areas while winter is already underway in others.
Fog & low cloud on the Central Plateau
On the Central Plateau, in cities like Bern and Zurich, persistent low cloud and fog are common features of the weather, especially when high-pressure systems dominate. This can lead to days on end of complete cloud cover.
Typically, temperatures only reach the high single figures during the day, falling to near zero or just above at night. On average, there are only about two hours of sunshine per day across the whole plateau in November.
Snow starts to settle in the Jura Mountains
In the Jura Mountains, there is slightly more sunshine because the elevation puts most places above the fog and low cloud. At La Chaux-de-Fonds, expect just over three hours of sunshine on average per day.
However, temperatures are a degree or two cooler than on the plateau, especially at night, when they typically fall to zero or below. Snow is not guaranteed to fall in November, but it becomes increasingly likely as the month ends.
More snow in the Swiss Alps
Meanwhile, by the beginning of November, the Swiss Alps are already experiencing winter conditions, with occasional to increasingly regular snowfall above 1,200 to 1,800 metres. Typically, snowfall occurs when passing weather systems dump it on the mountain slopes. Once past, there are generally periods of sunshine, so overall, you can expect three to four hours of sunshine per day on average.
In Davos, Zermatt and St Moritz, daytime highs hit just 4°C to 5°C and every night they fall well below zero. In the deep valleys of the Alps, such as Sion and Chur, it is much warmer, with daytime temperatures averaging 10°C and rarely falling below zero at night. Here, the first proper snowfalls of winter do not normally occur until December.
Becoming cooler on the southern lakes
On the southern slopes of the Alps near the Italian border, there is about the same amount of sunshine as in the Alps. Despite being at much lower elevations, the lakes in the south actually get a lot of damp, cloudy weather moving in from the Mediterranean in November.
Daytime maximum temperatures are the warmest in the country at around 11°C to 12°C, but that is quite a bit cooler than in October. At night, temperatures rarely fall below 5°C, and although you can expect over three and a half hours of sunshine per day on average, there is still quite a lot of rain at times.
