What is the weather in Switzerland in October like?

By the beginning of October, autumn is in full swing across all of Switzerland. Temperatures are down by as much as 5°C in some places compared with September and, with each passing week there is a noticeable reduction in daylight hours.

Fog & low cloud on the Central Plateau

On the Central Plateau, periods of low cloud and fog become more common. Expect just three-and-a-half hours of sunshine per day on average across the whole plateau; that's almost half the September average. This increase in cloud cover brings a few more days with rain, but overall, the weather remains largely dry.

In Zurich and Bern, temperatures during the day rarely reach 15°C, falling well into single figures at night, while in Geneva and Lausanne it is a touch warmer.

Wetter & cooler in the Jura Mountains

To the north in the Jura Mountains, with its greater exposure to Atlantic weather, there is a little more rain and it's a degree or two cooler than on the plateau, but still with three-and-a-half hours of sunshine per day on average.

Nighttime temperatures commonly drop below 5°C. Towards the end of the month, the first winter snow can be expected on higher mountain peaks.

First snow of the season in the Alps

In the Swiss Alps the weather is more variable, with crisp sunny days alternating with periods of cloud, wind and rain, or snow, as cold fronts move through. During the day at resorts like St Moritz and Zermatt temperatures can reach 10°C but fall to zero or below overnight.

Down in the lower valleys such as at Sion it is a lot warmer with temperatures sometimes rising to the high teens during the day.

It is sunnier in the Alps than on the Plateau with over four hours of sunshine per day on average. This time of year is also when the first snowfalls of the season typically occur above 1,500 metres, while in the lower valleys it is at least another month before this becomes common.

More prolonged rain in the south

On the southern slopes of the Alps near the Italian border, October is another notably wet month. When it occurs, rainfall tends to be more prolonged than in summer because it is driven by weather systems moving in from the Mediterranean.

However, it is also one of the sunniest regions of Switzerland, with an average of over four-and-a-half hours of sunshine per day. Expect daytime temperature to reach the high teens, falling to around 10°C overnight.
