What is the weather in Switzerland in February like?

It is still very much winter everywhere in Switzerland in February, although as the days go by, daylight hours are increasing.

Grey skies & fog in the cities

In cities on the central plateau, such as Zurich, Bern and Geneva, grey skies and fog still persist but with diminishing frequency. During the day, temperatures are likely to rise to mid-single figures above zero, but still fall to below zero overnight. And there is a small increase in sunshine hours compared to January, with just over three hours of sunshine per day on average.

Places in the Jura mountains get about the same amount of sunshine per day, but without the fog that plagues the lowlands. However, it is colder here, and there is more snow.

Snow conditions for skiing at their best

If you are heading for the Alps in Switzerland, snow conditions for skiing are usually at their best in February, and with daylight hours increasing, there is more time to enjoy it.

In Zermatt, at the end of February, there are 90 minutes more daylight per day than at the beginning of the month. Zermatt also has around four hours of sunshine per day on average in February, while in Crans Montana, there is even more, with five hours a day.

In the far south of the country on the border with Italy, February is typically 1°C to 2°C warmer than January, though it is still cold. Daytime temperatures rarely rise above 10°C, but as the month progresses, you start to notice longer, brighter days.

In fact, on average, throughout the month, there are normally five hours or more of sunshine per day. While crocuses usually start blooming at the beginning of February around Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano, they don't appear in other parts of Switzerland until the end of the month. This is partly due to the southern location and partly to the lower elevations.
