What is the weather in Switzerland in June like?

The weather in June in Switzerland is warmer but more changeable than in May.

Central Plateau: expect afternoon thunderstorms

Noticeable features, especially on the Central Plateau, are afternoon thunderstorms, which can bring short but sometimes heavy showers followed by clearer, slightly cooler conditions.

Average daytime maximum temperatures in Zurich and Bern are between 22°C and 23°C, while in Geneva, it's a couple of degrees warmer. Expect a lot of sunshine with around seven hours on average per day across the Plateau and about an hour more in the far west, for example, at Geneva.

In the Jura Mountains, it is a little cooler, by as much as 4°C, simply because of the elevation and a little cloudier. Expect around six hours of sunshine per day on average, but with no more days with rain than on the Plateau.

One of the best months to visit the Swiss Alps

In the Swiss Alps, June is when spring gradually gives way to summer. It is one of the most beautiful times of year to visit, with blue skies, green meadows and snow-capped mountains.

As with places on the Central Plateau, rain showers can sometimes develop in the afternoon or early evening almost anywhere in the mountains, sometimes accompanied by thunder. Such periods of rain are typically short-lived, but they make the morning hours the best time of day to get out and about.

In resorts such as Zermatt, daytime temperatures typically rise to around 17°C to 18°C from overnight lows of 13°C to 14°C, and there are usually five to six hours of sunshine per day on average at these high elevations.

In the valleys, the days of fog and cloud have long gone, and it tends to be slightly sunnier here than nearer the mountain summits. The Rhone Valley, once again, is one of the sunniest places in Switzerland in June, with over eight hours of sunshine per day on average in Sion and over seven hours in nearby Crans Montana.

Mid-June to mid-July is the peak of the wildflower season in the Swiss Alps, when you can expect some alpine meadows to be carpeted in blooms of different colours and plant varieties. So this is a great time for hiking in the mountains.

Wetter but also warmer & sunnier in the south

Nearer the border with Italy in the far south, there is more of a Mediterranean feel to the weather. By the beginning of June, summer is already well advanced here, and you can expect seven to eight hours of sunshine per day on average, with daytime temperatures reaching the mid-twenties and falling to around the mid- to high-teens at night.

More rain falls here than elsewhere in Switzerland in June, but showers are usually short-lived and localised in the afternoon or early evening. There are normally fewer than 11 days in the month with some rain, so it's not an everyday event. However, the weather is generally cloudier in the afternoon than in the morning.
