Oman climate overview
Strategically positioned on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman was historically important as the last-stop on the spice route to India, and as the gateway to the Arabian Gulf. Today, it has modest oil and gas reserves and is cautiously embracing tourism. The country still retains much of its traditional Arabian character, manifested in the old-style souqs (markets) and locals in national dress.
Extensive desert covers much of the interior, with impressive red dunes found in the remote Wahiba Sands, which still support indigenous Bedouin tribes. The tropical climate sees virtually no rain all year with hot summer temperatures and warm winters, although winter nights can become cool, even cold.
The Hajar Mountains down Oman's eastern coast are a barren and desolate backdrop. There is little vegetation, despite frequent afternoon showers, which bring the risk of hazardous flash floods in mountain wadis. Their imposing bleakness is spectacular in itself.
Mountain-hugging roads lead to ancient forts, while spectacular fjord-like features are seen in the northern end of the mountain chain, towards the Musandam Peninsula, where steep foothills plunge into the Gulf Of Oman. The mountains and the lowland strip leading down to the coast are very hot and humid in the summer with afternoon showers.
The southern coast catches the Southwest Monsoon, resulting in cool, wet, and misty conditions from mid-June to mid-September. In contrast to the rest of the country, the coastal strip is lush and green during the summer with tropical beaches. Wintertime sees a return to dry and sunny weather with warm temperatures.
