Things to do in Gran Canaria in September 2020

La Aldea de San Nicolás' Fiesta del Charco always draws a crowd: more than 20,000 revellers try to catch mullets in an oversized rock pool using their bare hands. Another fun fiesta takes place in Agüimes with the Traía del Gofio y Agua, which is essentially a food fight with gofio (toasted cornflour) and water the ammunition of choice. If you're more a watcher than a doer, you might prefer to head to Mógan's Encuentro Veneguera: one of the island's longest-running music festivals.

Up north, Guía holds its Fiesta de Las Marias with its residents bearing fruit brought down from Montaña de Vergara in a procession, which moves to the percussive groove of drums and seashells. Teror's Fiestas del Pino draw pilgrims from across the Canary Islands, many who make their way by foot from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. There are extra bus services put on if you don't fancy the schlep from the capital.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria itself, craft cerveza and musica en vivo are the combo on offer at the LPA Beer & Music Festival. Here, you have to pay for the more than 20 beers available on draught however, there's no charge for the live music.
