Things to do in Gran Canaria in March 2021
Gran Canaria locals are loath to let carnival finish. It works its way south on the island with Carnaval Internacional de Maspalomas the last of the year on the island. Starting in late February at the earliest and early March at the latest, it's possibly even more colourful in terms of costumes and partygoers than the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria version.
Depending on when Easter falls, March can also see the island "celebrating" Semana Santa. Holy Week, as its name suggests, is a pious affair with the Easter Bunny conspicuous by his absence. The biggest parades, which feature the scary-looking nazarenos with their Ku-Klux-Klan-style hoods, take place in the capital.
Romerías are constants in Spanish-speaking countries. These religious pilgrimages see traditionally-dressed natives making their way to the church with offerings, doling out the likes of hard-boiled eggs and papas arrugadas (new potatoes wrinkled by being boiled in severely salty water) to passers by on the street for free. Join in one of the first two Saturdays of March in Santa María de Guía's Montaña Alta as part of the festivities held in honour of their patron saint, San José.
Event | Location | Date | |
---|---|---|---|
Romería Ofrenda Honor al San José | Montaña Alta, Santa María de Guía | either the first or second Saturday of the month | |
Carnaval Internacional de Maspalomas | Maspalomas | 2nd to 11th March 2018 | |
Semana Santa | Las Palmas de Gran Canaria | dates match those of Easter |
