1. Bath, Somerset, England

Bijou Bath offers the best of both worlds: you'll enjoy all the delights, from museums and galleries to shops and bars, of a cultural city while surrounded by countryside. You can easily cram a week full of varied activities both in and around beautiful Bath.

Visit the Romans Baths, make time for a dip at Thermae Bath Spa, climb Bath Abbey's tower for the view and step inside No.1 Royal Crescent for a flavour of what late 18th-century life was like behind the door of Bath's most prestigious address.

Once fully cultured, get out and about on the six-mile Bath Skyline Walk, hike in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), book a day canoeing on the River Avon, visit the 14th-century English Heritage site of Farleigh Hungerford Castle or go to buzzing Bristol for oodles more to see and do.

2. Barnstaple, Devon, England

Barnstaple, considered the capital of North Devon, is an ancient port town on the banks of the River Taw. It's a prosperous place with a fascinating past that can be discovered at the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon.

You'll find plenty of family-run shops along the Victorian front of Butcher's Row while food, crafts and antiques can be sourced in its traditional Pannier Market.

Enjoy art in the outdoors at Broomhill Sculpture Gardens or hire bikes to experience sections of the 180-mile loop that is the Tarka Trail.

Barnstaple is also close to the wide open stretch of Saunton Sands. This long beach is backed by the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Braunton Burrows and the whole coastal area can be traversed along sections of the South West Coast Path.

Finally, a world of activities can be tackled in Exmoor National Park to the north and Dartmoor National Park to the south.

3. Norfolk Broads, Norfolk, England

The Norfolk Broads, part of The Broads National Park, is made up of a network of navigable waterways. Rivers weave their way through the low-lying fenland opening onto lakes (known locally as broads), which beg to be enjoyed, and June is a beautiful month for doing exactly that.

You don't have to be a seafaring expert, however; there's a huge range of activities for all skill levels. While you can charter a sailing boat for the duration you could, instead, book a cosy cottage and dip your toe in with sailing lessons, hire an easy motorboat for a day pootling on the water, hop in a canoe or try your abs at paddleboarding.

Nearby Norwich has plenty of history, culture and places to eat and drink, while Great Yarmouth has everything you'd expect from a vintage seaside resort.

There are numerous RSPB reserves including Berney Marshes and Breydon Water where you'll get a real taste of the wild marshy landscape of the region complete with the iconic Berney Arms Windmill.

4. Falmouth, Cornwall, England

The working harbour town of Falmouth in Cornwall may be petite but it has a whole lot going on for anyone looking for some seasonal sunshine by the sea.

It's a place that succeeds in blending the old with the new; its proud maritime heritage, best explored at the unmissable National Maritime Museum Cornwall, compliments its burgeoning creative scene.

Boats deliver the freshest seafood to some truly innovative and stylish independent restaurants and cafés, and you won't struggle for places to grab a seriously good coffee on the go. Expect chic craft shops and do call by Falmouth Art Gallery to see the latest exhibits from local artists.

For a burst of fresh sea air, walk out along the headland to Pendennis Point where you'll not only come face-to-face with the robust remains of Henry VIII's Pendennis Castle but will likely spot seals, possibly even dolphins, at play in the water below.

5. Blackpool, Lancashire, England

If there's one reason Blackpool continues to pull in the holidaying punters, it has to be its magnificent beach. The huge stretch of golden sand, which runs for seven miles, boasts three piers loaded with attractions and is backed by a lively promenade.

You'll find most of the action along The Golden Mile. This is the section between the North and South piers and is by far the most popular with arcades, live shows and plenty of amenities.

Get a bird's eye view of it all at Blackpool Tower Eye & 4D Experience before hopping aboard a Heritage Tram Tour to rattle along the waterfront in vintage style.

Blackpool is also well located for anyone looking to explore the wider county of Lancashire. Visit places such as Marton Mere Local Nature Reserve, RSPB Ribble Discovery Centre or head to the Forest of Bowland AONB for walking, cycling and a bit history in the shape of the 12th-century Sawley Abbey ruins.

6. Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England

Two sweeping sandy beaches help make Scarborough a place with something for everyone. Although famous as a seaside destination of choice for discerning Victorians, Scarborough is much older with a collection of winding cobbled streets and period architecture to prove it.

While the quieter side of North Bay is where you'll find surfing enthusiasts, colourful beach huts, the North Bay Railway and a shoreline ideal for rock pooling at low tide, South Bay is where most of the amenities and entertainment live. Think boat trips, fish and chips, arcades and candy floss.

The rocky headland which separates the bays is topped with the ruins of 12th-century Scarborough Castle. Then there's The Rotunda Museum, which explores the coastal geology and has an epic geological timeline frieze adorning the walls of its Georgian gallery.

Meanwhile, the Scarborough Art Gallery can be found among the fine buildings of The Crescent.

7. Lake District, Cumbria, England

History and nature combine within the boundary of the Lake District National Park in northwest England.

There's a mountain of activities, many of which take place on or in its famous lakes such as sailing, paddle boarding and canoeing, not to mention walking, climbing and cycling. If mountain biking is your thing, head for the purpose-built trails of Grizedale Forest and Whinlatter Forest.

If you prefer to dive into the region's history, be sure to visit Ambleside Roman Fort and Ravenglass Roman Bath House before stepping into the world of Beatrix Potter at her 17th-century farmhouse, Hill Top, and venturing into the Industrial Revolution at Stott Park Bobbin Mill.

You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation with everything from campsites to luxurious country retreats on offer. Many choose to settle around the main hubs of Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick.

8. Brecon Beacons, Wales

The Brecon Beacons National Park centres around the mountain range of the same name, the Black Mountains and Fforest Fawr, a UNESCO Global Geopark. It's a giant open space fit for all manner of activities and any holiday here is time well spent.

The geology makes it a spectacular spot for rock climbing and caving. In fact, the geopark is home to four of the five longest limestone cave systems in Britain. Dan-yr-Ogof, Cathedral Cave and Bone Cave each promise dramatic experiences all within the same entry ticket.

There's a strong emphasis on family-friendly activities with a huge variety of things to do aimed at young pioneers such as junior ranger courses, woodland schools including archery, orienteering and guided sessions canoeing or windsurfing.

For the grown-ups, the opportunities are endless. As well as walking, fell running and mountain biking, you could see the park from a different perspective while alpaca trekking or horse riding.

10. Glasgow, Scotland

Scotland's capital of cool, Glasgow, is stuffed with things to do and see. An industrial city that's evolved around the water with shipbuilding at its heart, Glasgow is also a centre of art and creativity.

Both of these can be explored at the many museums within Glasgow. Make time for the Riverside Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

The city's eclectic Victorian and early 20th-century architecture is a free exhibition of its own. Don't miss the traditional tenement houses, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's The Lighthouse, the futuristic Science Centre or the hillside necropolis.

Outwith the city, you're well placed to get stuck into outdoor activities in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, a short drive from Glasgow, and for more history and culture, a day trip to Edinburgh is easily achieved by car or train.
