UK spring season

Spring in the UK starts in March and runs until the end of May.

The welcome burst of yellow daffodils, budding trees and longer days herald the arrival of spring in the UK. This most welcome of seasons marks the end of winter and kick starts a new cycle of life from lively lambs and chirping chicks to hope-filled green shoots.

It is, for many, simply the finest season of all, laden with promise and potential, including sanctioned chocolate egg consumption.

March plays host to the spring equinox, which artfully marks the mid-way point between summer and winter, while April and May are the bearers of multiple bank holidays: firstly, there's Good Friday and Easter Monday, coinciding with schools' Easter holidays that give many families the first opportunity to escape on a pre-summer break.

These are rapidly followed by both the Early May Bank Holiday and Spring Bank Holiday, the latter often overlapping with the May half-term holiday for families (although school term dates vary wildly across the UK).

When it comes to the weather in the UK in spring, there's typically a noticeable shift with increased daylight - in London, average daylight increases from 12 to 16 hours per day between March and May - and a slow but steady climb in the maximum temperature - again, London sees the average rise from 10°C to 17°C during the same period.

It's virtually impossible to feel anything but excited at the prospect of spring - it's our reward for enduring the dark months of winter and when we see things brighten, in every sense of the word.
