Thailand overview

This southeast Asian country, which lies between Cambodia, Burma and Laos, is one of the world's top winter-sun destinations.

November to February is the best time to visit, when dry and sunny weather prevails, though Chiang Mai and the region around the northern hills can be chilly in the evenings as the northeast monsoon winds blow in from China, bringing dryer air to high ground.

The same winds, however, can bring rain to southern Thailand if they sweep in from the Pacific across the Gulf of Siam; this means the far south, which has an equatorial climate, is hotter and muggier and has a longer rainy season than the rest of the country, which has a tropical monsoon climate.

Thailand's main rains come in May and last until October, but the run-up to them starts as early as February, when temperatures start to climb and humidity increases.

Avoid visiting in the height of the rainy season if you can, as heat, damp and humidity combine to make the atmosphere like a wet blanket.

What to pack for Thailand weather

Take light clothes with something warmer for winter nights in the north, and rainwear in the wet season.
