Cayman Islands climate overview
The Cayman Islands are situated in the Caribbean, nestled halfway between Cuba in the north and the mainland of Central America in the south. Claimed by Britain in the eighteenth century they remain today one of the few British colonies still in existence. The islands have flourished as an offshore banking centre and tax haven, having more financial institutions than New York City.
Famed for its idyllic coastline, the Cayman Islands are home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of the Caribbean. Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is particularly well renowned. However the brochure-perfect combination of white sand, palm trees, and blue sea also attracts many tourists, so the most popular beach settings have become well developed with hotels and shops.
Contrasting with sandy beaches are the sea cliffs on Cayman Brac. These spectacular white limestone rock-faces are riddled with caves.
Scuba diving and snorkelling is popular throughout the Cayman Islands with plenty of coral and colourful marine life. Underwater nature reserves have also been established to preserve the outstanding natural beauty.
The tropical climate has a winter dry season running from December to April although even during this time, an occasional shower is possible. The rainy summer season lasts from May to November when heavy tropical showers develop, many of which turn thundery. Summer daytime temperatures remain hot throughout the islands and only fall a few degrees during the winter months. Occasional hurricanes are possible from July to October.
