Things to do in Tenerife in July 2020
As summer continues in Tenerife, July's events' scene heats up. First up, Canarias Jazz & Más offers a number of concerts across the Canary Islands. There's jazz and more from a range of local and national artists at venues in La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Check the programme to see which concerts are free and those you have to pay for.
While there are no national bank holidays on the island, there are various public holidays across a number of Tenerife municipalities. For example, the Fiestas del Carmen take place in fishing communities up and down the island. If you only go to one, make it Puerto de la Cruz's, where a throng of worshippers crowd the dock to see a statue of the Virgin Carmen carried by locals onto a boat and a subsequent lavish maritime procession.
Although Tenerife was conquered by Spain at the end of the 15th century, there have been subsequent British invasions and we don't mean by the tourists in summer. Where Sir Walter Raleigh failed, so did Admiral Nelson, who lost his right arm as the British Navy attempted to take Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797. They reenact the battle each year in July.
