Types of campsite across the UK

Puritans might suggest that wild camping is the only way to camp and that any extra creature comforts, such as showers, electrical hook-ups and on-site shops, let alone swimming pools and kids' clubs, undermine the whole ethos of camping.

That, however, is nonsense. Camping and caravanning can be whatever you want it to be. Yes, that could be in the remote wilderness but it could also be at a well-equipped campsite or holiday park where conveniences for all ages are to hand - it is supposed to be a holiday.

Campsites vary hugely from basic facilities to all-singing-all-dancing resorts. You'll find a range of scenic campsites on farmland, for example, where an honesty box takes payment for fresh eggs, rustic showers operate in the morning only and the local pub is a short stroll away.

Then there are much bigger sites with restaurants, play areas, hairdryers and even pre-assembled camping or glamping pitches. Take your pick and ensure you book a campsite that best suits the sort of experience you want to have.

Camping vs caravanning

If you're dipping your toe into the world of camping and caravanning (including towed caravans, campervans and motorhomes) for the first time, you might be wondering where to start investing your money.

Ultimately, only you will know what is likely to suit you and your budget best. It also depends on what sort of experience you want to have and how you feel about the practicalities of both.

From the faff of setting up a tent and using shared toilet facilities to the extra cost associated with buying, storing and fuelling a caravan, there are, naturally, plenty of cons to go around but they're far outweighed by the pros. Some of these include:

  • camping is a real adventure in nature
  • camping can be super cosy whatever the weather
  • camping is more affordable than caravanning
  • caravanning is more comfortable than camping
  • caravanning gives you your own toilet facilities
  • caravanning allows you to 'unhitch', 'hook-up' and start exploring

People tend to be in one camp (sorry) or the other (I am a devoted camper) but, equally, both camping and caravanning have their merits and once you settle on the right one for you, you won't look back. Remember, both camping and caravanning:

  • are family-friendly & fun for kids of all ages
  • give you a chance to experience a different way of living
  • let you to enjoy evenings around a campfire, BBQs & cooking outdoors
