How to collect Avios points

Avios points are often referred to as 'air miles', but there are many other ways to collect Avios points and earn rewards to spend. Find out about some of the easiest ways you can collect points from the list below:

  • By travelling - in addition to purchasing flights, you can collect Avios points when you book an Uber, buy train tickets, stay at a hotel or rent a car
  • By shopping - you can earn Avios points when you shop at many retailers, including Sainsbury's, eBay & ASOS as well as shopping online via the Avios app or website, so that Avios can track and reward your spending
  • By banking - you can also boost your points balance with your everyday banking activities such as paying bills & spending on credit cards.
  • By purchasing or subscribing - you can buy Avios points as a one-off purchase or by signing up to a regular subscription
  • By converting other loyalty scheme points - you can transfer points from other schemes such as Nectar, Loganair and Qatar Airways Privilege Club to your Avios balance.

Avios also runs regular promotions where you can earn additional bonus points when you spend with selected retailers during a specified time period.

Airlines

Avios is the rewards currency of British Airways* and many other airlines and partners, including Aer Lingus*, Iberia* and Qatar Airways*. This means you can collect Avios points on most flights with participating airlines, with the amount of points you collect depending on the airline you fly with, the type of ticket you hold and the cabin you fly in.

Some airline membership schemes, like the British Airways Club*, for example, also offer different tiers of membership, with the amount of points you collect depending on your tier.

Other travel brands

As well as airlines, Avios partners with many other travel brands, meaning you can also earn and spend points on hotel stays, car rental and experiences around the world.

When it comes to accommodation, there are more than 300,000 hotels around the world that partner with Avios. So whether you're planning a romantic city break in Paris* or a relaxing vacation in the Maldives*, Avios can help you get there.

There are also thousands of car rental companies worldwide that allow you to pay for your car hire with Avios and you may be able to take advantage of additional perks such as free additional drivers and priority service.

Plus, you can use your Avios points on thousands of memorable tours and experiences when you travel, as well as on all High Life Shop or High Life Café products and at The Wine Flyer. You also have the choice to donate your Avios to charities supported by Avios through the BA Better World Community Fund.

Credit cards

You can earn Avios points on your everyday spending with a British Airways American Express credit card*.

When you sign up for an Avios credit card, you'll receive welcome bonus points, which can vary between 15,000 and 50,000 depending on the type of card you choose. You'll then earn additional Avios points on your credit card purchases.

Other perks of Avios credit cards include bonus points and Companion Vouchers, which can be used to either take someone with you on a Reward Flight or, if you're travelling solo, reduce the amount of points required for a Reward Flight by 50%.

What are Avios points worth?

There are many ways that Avios can be spent, collected and converted. As such, there isn't a specific valuation for each point. What your points are worth is what you can spend them on; the value depends on how you use them.

For example, when redeeming your Avios points on flights, the value of each point changes depending on various factors, including your destination and the cabin you fly in.

But if we had to put a rough value on one point, you can go by the general rule that one point is worth around 1p. However, this can drop to 1.5p or 0.5p depending on the deal.

How do Reward Flights work?

One of the main perks of Avios is Reward Flights*. This means that you can book a seat on British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and other OneWorld partner flights* and use Avios as your main payment method.

The number of points required for a Rewards Flight depends on the destination you're travelling to. Seats are made available around 355 days before departure, and the only cash you need to contribute is to pay for fees, taxes and carrier changes.

If your points balance doesn't quite cover the flight, you can purchase additional Avios or pay the difference in cash. You can also change or cancel your flight for just £35 per person.

If you're looking to book Reward Flights, plan ahead as they're often snapped up quickly. It also helps if you're flexible on dates. To be sure you don't miss your flight, you can sign up for notifications in the Avios app to receive an alert when your seat becomes available.

Some of the many flight destinations you can fly to with your Avios points include Lisbon*, New York*, Los Angeles*, Cape Town* and Sydney*.

FAQs

How long will it take for Avios points to appear in my account?

How long it takes for your Avios points to show in your balance varies depending on how you've collected them. Online purchases can take up to five days to appear as pending and are then awarded within 35 days. Meanwhile, in-store purchases can take up to 10 days to appear as pending, and are awarded within 45 days.

Purchased Avios points as a one-off? They'll be credited to your account not long after purchase. Meanwhile, Avios for BA flights* are awarded and credited to your account around three working days after your booking departure date.

For hotels and travel bookings, please allow around 90-120 days after your trip has been completed for your Avios points to be awarded. Points collected through policies, contracts and subscriptions also take around 90-120 days to be awarded into your account.

How do I link my Avios & Qatar Airways Privilege Club accounts?

You can link your accounts on Avios.com, qatarairways.com* or via the Qatar Airways mobile app. For account linking to be successful, the first name, surname and date of birth registered on each account must match.

Do Avios points expire?

Purchased Avios points only expire if your account has been inactive for 36 months. Each time you buy Avios, your balance will remain active for 36 months after the date of purchase.

How many Avios points do I need to upgrade my flights?

The amount of Avios points you need to upgrade depends on a couple of things, including your choice of cabin and when you're travelling (you'll generally need more Avios points if you're travelling during peak season rather than travelling off-peak).

To work out how many points you'll need to upgrade, simply deduct the total Avios points needed for your flight and cabin from the total Avios points required for your desired travel flight and cabin. The difference is how many Avios points you'll need to upgrade your flights.

Are Avios points financially protected?

No, unfortunately, Avios points are not covered by the ATOL scheme. This means that should something go wrong with your flights, you'll be unable to claim your used points back.
