It's an added bonus that this popular Greek island is blessed with some of the most pristine beaches in the country. Ringed with turquoise waters as well as sandy and rocky shorelines, there's a beach on Mykonos to suit every taste.

1. Agios Sostis Beach

Beautiful Agios Sostis is a sandy stretch is most likely to be crowd-free since it lacks lounger rentals and beach bars. Although the summer winds tend to hit the northern part of the island, on calm days you'll find yourself at one with nature here.

There's a small restaurant - Kiki's Tavern - where a whole array of salads are served as well as fresh grilled fish and meats (cash only).

Away from the beach you can sit in the grounds of Agios Sostis church. Perched atop the hill, Saint Agios Sostis keeps a sleepy watch on all who use the bay. It's the place for complete relaxation

2. Agios Stefanos Beach

Named after the little chapel of Saint Stephen, situated at the tip of the bay, Agios Stefanos is within close proximity to Mykonos Town. Families will love this beach with its shallow waters and choice of tavernas nearby.

It's also popular in the early evenings at sunset, offering views across Mykonos Town, the uninhabited neighbouring UNESCO island of Delos and the rocky outcrop of Rinia.

3. Psarou Beach

This white-sand beach is the island's VIP destination where you'll always find a series of yachts moored. Psarou Beach is where the famous Nammos Restaurant organises daily summer beach parties, and you'll find yourself dancing like everyone else around you.

As for grabbing that large posh sunbed that seems empty, don't bother - it's been secured in advance, likely for the entire summer, by someone who knows someone.

4. Panormos Bay

North of Mykonos Town, this sandy beach offers two environments: an atmospheric beach bar and restaurant that rents out sunbeds, serves up cocktails and plays loud and lively mixes alongside a fine sand beach with no facilities, just the view of the island's turquoise sea surrounded by nature.

Panormos Bay is sufficiently large that if it's peace and quiet you're after, you won't be affected by the livelier beach if you're at the other end away from the action.

5. Paraga Beach

Since the sandy and once secluded Paraga Beach attracted the hippy crowd of the seventies, it's continued to evolve as one of the great places to party on Mykonos.

Here you'll find several beach bars that pump dance music throughout the day, while the area around the beach features all kinds of accommodation that typically attract a young, lively crowd.

6. Paradise Beach

Paradise is the most famous party beach in Mykonos. If you're within walking distance of it, simply follow the music, which overtakes the crowds from day-to-night. It attracts a diverse, mostly young, international group looking to let loose from dusk till dawn.

7. Agrari Beach

Simple, pretty and peaceful, Agrari is known for its sparkling sea that gently meets a stretch of shingle beach - a swimmer's paradise with few hotels and some restaurants dotted around.

Agrari Beach reaches into neighbouring Elia Beach and together they offer a calm, laid-back atmosphere surrounded by barren rocky hills that Mykonos is famous for.

8. Agios Ioannis Beach

Just west of Mykonos Town is the beach of Agios Ioannis, known for featuring in the hit movie Shirley Valentine. At the time of filming the area was idyllic in that it was underdeveloped. Now you can expect to still enjoy the beach but at a more luxurious level with sun loungers and cabanas.

The ever-popular Hippy Fish Restaurant not only offers top quality Mykonian cuisine but also opens out almost onto the beach - a true Shirley Valentine experience.

9. Platis Gialos Beach

Platis Gialos is a colourful, friendly, small beach town that's bustling with holidaymakers and beach lovers. Several hotels and sea view restaurants hug the golden coastline that features shallow waters popular with families and young children. The beach itself is lined with sunbed rentals, beach cafés and water sports facilities.

10. Kalo Livadi Beach

South of Ano Mera, the second largest town in Mykonos, you'll find Kalo Livadi Beach where a calm, sophisticated and family-friendly feel awaits. Kalo Livadi, which translates to 'good valley', is named for its location at the end of a long valley.

And its beach, surrounded by nature and lapped by shallow waters, is what attracts people the most. There's also a water sports area where you can rent a kayak or similar.
