Geneva or Zurich: which wins for a Swiss city break?
Home to a major office of the United Nations and headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), home too of world-famous lake views and perhaps the globe's most famous towering fountain; surely Geneva will win this unfair battle of Swiss cities? Well, let's not be so hasty.
Zurich is a much bigger city and enjoys an impressive setting too. And it's no slouch either when it comes to world-class museums, superb hotels, great restaurants, day-trip options, and atmosphere, as we discover when the two cities go head-to-head in a battle where it's impossible to stay neutral.

German or French?
Switzerland is a country split right through its heart. And we're not just talking language. This is a country divided between its Swiss French and Swiss German-speaking inhabitants, and Geneva stands proudly as the prime city of the former, just as Zurich presides over the latter.
You'll see and feel the differences everywhere from menus and signs, right through to culture and the arts, and the ways in which each city expresses what it is and what it is about.
To choose between the influences of the French or German cultures would be as hard and as unfair as choosing between France and Germany, so we'll have to call this one an honourable draw.
International or Swiss?
There is a clear divide here, too. Geneva is very much an international, unrelentingly cosmopolitan city, where English is spoken more widely than in any other Swiss city, alongside a smorgasbord of other languages. This outward-facing city welcomes the United Nations alongside the Red Cross, CERN and the World Trade Organization.
Zurich may welcome the world too, but it just does not have the same volume of cross-border multinational organisations and their wealth of workers and visitors. So Zurich is, in a word, more solidly, more traditionally 'Swiss' than Geneva. As we're looking at a comparison of two Swiss cities, we'll have to chalk this one up as a win for Zurich.
Which boasts the most spectacular setting?
We're really spoilt for choice here as both cities enjoy deeply dramatic settings. Zurich sits atop Lake Zurich, surrounded by a sweep of hills and greenery, like a box of Swiss chocolates.
If we keep the box of chocolates imagery going, Geneva is similar, though its box is even more captivating, more ruggedly mountainous with an even more impressive lake. And with the chance of viewing Mont Blanc on a good day.
Zurich impresses here, but it has to be Geneva, quite simply one of Europe's most impressively set cities. And we've not even mentioned that spectacular Jet d'Eau soaring over Lake Geneva.
Where is the most museum magic?
Both cities overflow with museums and galleries. Mix it with Monet and Picasso at the Kunsthaus Zurich (one of Europe's great galleries), dig deep into the country's culture at the Swiss National Museum, go football crazy at the FIFA Museum and swirl around the world at the Rietberg Museum.
In Geneva, tour the United Nations Office of Geneva, marvel at CERN, be impressed by their unstinting efforts at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum and check the time at the Patek Phillipe Museum. With lashings of cerebral wet weather options in both cities, this is a world-class tie.
Who has the best food & drink?
The most delicious test of all. Swiss wine is underrated, so savour it in both cities. Must-try dishes in both cities include raclette, fondue and rosti. Francophile Geneva does classic French cuisine supremely well in expensive restaurants that still offer value for money for proper haute cuisine.
Zurich doesn't always hit the same top-of-the-top-end heights, but for Swiss cuisine it is at least as impressive as it gazes to Switzerland's hinterland as much as it does to another country.
Zurich trumps it on the beer front with its beer halls inexorably bound into the Swiss German culture. It's hard to eat badly in either, whether it's at the new wave of food stalls, through to fancy Michelin gastronomic haunts, so we'll call this a lip-smackingly tasty tie.
Which has the best hotels?
With views over Lake Geneva to the Alps and Mont Blanc, surely Geneva's hotels win hands down? Well, not necessarily. Yes, all the old lakeside dames do still hold massive appeal (the Beau-Rivage is a living legend overlooking the lake and the snow-capped Alps).
And Geneva boasts a broad spectrum of accommodation thanks to its army of international workers and visitors, but Zurich quietly harbours some sublime places to stay.
A stand-out is the palatial Hotel Schweizerhof, which has presided in its classic luxury style here between the Limmat and Shil rivers for over 150 years. We have a, perhaps surprising, tie on this one.
Which has the best atmosphere?
Zurich's rich swirl of medieval architecture sweeps you off into fairytale Switzerland and transports you back through the centuries. This historic drama sits cheek by jowl with slick modern architecture, soaring old church spires as quintessentially Zurich as the sleek trams that ease around the ordered, perfectly curated streets.
Geneva also has its older quarters and impressive modern architecture. It may be a little bit guilty of sometimes relying too heavily on its dramatic lake appeal, but with that towering 140m-high water spout we'll forgive it.
The distinctive cultures of each city tie into the atmosphere, with Geneva enjoying an international atmosphere; Zurich again more traditional Swiss. Distinctively different and hard to compare. We're all square again here.
Day trips
Both cities are ideal bases. From Zurich, you can hurl yourself into the Swiss hinterland using the super-efficient railway system to enjoy the likes of Lucerne and
On winter sports, Geneva probably wins, with the popular resort of Verbier within striking distance. There are vineyards to explore too and, of course, boat trips on Lake Geneva. Our international hub of Geneva shades this one.
And the winner?
Geneva, as its citizens would no doubt expect, does come out on top here, but Zurich proves a strong contender, and its equally proud inhabitants will not be surprised at how close-run a contest it proved.
Switzerland is very lucky to harbour not one but two world-class cities, not to mention ones that are so dramatically different. It's tough choosing one, so if you've got the time, why not go twin-centre and indulge in both?
It is less than three hours by fast train between them in this most spectacular of European countries.
