ABTA research shows confidence growing as UK travel restrictions end

As all remaining Covid-19 restrictions on travel come to end in the UK, ABTA, the trade association for UK tour operators and travel agents, has released new research which shows confidence is on the up among consumers.

Findings show that 57% of people surveyed have already booked a holiday overseas within the next 12 months. This figure is close to what was recorded pre-pandemic indicating that consumer confidence has returned and is likely to continue to grow.

When it comes to where people are going, ABTA's survey revealed Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey remain favourites while other destinations such as Egypt (+87% compared with people's travel intentions surveyed in 2019), Malta (+51%), the UAE (+31%), Portugal (+30%) and Mexico (+26%) are seeing a surge in popularity.

These destinations not only guarantee good weather and beaches - suggesting that the beach holiday is very much in demand - but also welcome UK travellers who have proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or a negative Covid-19 test. When it comes to Mexico, travellers do not even need proof of vaccination or any Covid-19 test results.

Please note: while the UK has dropped all travel restrictions, many other countries still have Covid-19 regulations in place; be sure to check what's required before booking your holiday.

Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive of ABTA, said: "It is a landmark day for holidaymakers and the travel industry. From now on people can enjoy their holiday up to the last minute without having to think about any paperwork or tests on their return to the UK.

"While we're not yet back to pre-pandemic levels, our research clearly shows that consumer confidence is returning, and things are looking up for the industry.

"We're encouraging anyone who is thinking of booking a trip this year to speak to an ABTA Member, who will not only advise on the best destination and arrangements to suit the customer's need but also keep the customer up to date on any changes they need to be aware of, so they can book and travel with confidence."
