Romantic things to do in Barcelona, Spain

When it comes to romantic holidays or city breaks, most think of Paris, Rome and Venice. However the Catalan city of Barcelona shouldn't be overlooked; it contains some of the most wonderful and distinctive architecture in Europe as well as bustling markets, beautiful hotels and excellent food. But what are the most romantic things to do in Barcelona?

1. Have your head in the clouds

Gaudi's stunning Basilica of Sagrada Familia is for many, the most iconic image of Barcelona. The church remains unfinished after nearly a century and a half of construction and is unlike any other building you're likely to see. The bell tower offers the most breathtaking views of the city and is the perfect place for a proposal, as long as both of you have a head for heights!

2. Have a lady and the tramp moment

Sharing a meal can be very romantic, and in Barcelona you're never far from a Tapas restaurant. Choosing a selection of mouth watering plates for you and your loved one to sample and sharing a bottle of velvety Spanish red can make for the perfect romantic evening.

3. Take a romantic stroll

There is no shortage of places to walk in Barcelona; however promenading along Port Vell at sunset will certainly flex those romantic muscles! This palm-lined, seafront walk takes in some of the city's most cherished architecture and passes sculptures, museums and monuments.

4. Say 'Ole' as you trip the light fantastic

Barcelona is famous for its flamenco and salsa dancing. While it's not everyone's idea of a great time, these dances are undeniably romantic and the perfect way to get up close and personal with your beau. Classes and dance nights can be found without too much hassle and can offer great entertainment for those not wishing to hit the floor themselves.

5. Take a picnic

There is something very romantic about a picnic and in Barcelona you'll find some great places to park your blanket and relax. Entrance to Barcelona's most loved park is free and offers a variety of places to sit. Parc de la Ciutadella offers some sanctuary from the sunshine as well as luscious green grass and even some musicians at the weekend.

6. See a film in a castle

Relive those first date moments on a grand scale with the open-air cinema at Montjuic. During the summer, the moat at Montjuic castle becomes awash with couples and families taking in an outdoor movie screening.

7. Take a bath

Set in the historic underground wells of the El Born region, you'll find the Aire de Barcelona. This superb spa and traditional bath is the ultimate in romantic pampering. They pride themselves on supplying peace and relaxation, with extra treatments if you wish to indulge further.
