Single-trip travel insurance

Planning a mini break or your annual family holiday? Single-trip travel insurance provides customisable cover for one trip to a single destination and is a cost-effective way to ensure cover if you're making a one-off journey.

Whilst single-trip travel insurance is great for many travellers, it's not the best option if you plan to make multiple trips in one year, as costs can soon add up (plus, reapplications are required each time).

Single-trip travel insurance* also doesn't usually include ski insurance or cover for pre-existing medical conditions as standard. Your coverage ends once you've returned home.

Annual travel insurance

If you're a regular traveller, annual travel insurance provides cost-effective cover for unlimited journeys in a 12-month period. Trips are usually limited to 31 days each, but this may be extended to 60 or 90 days on request, depending on your travel insurance company.

Annual travel insurance* policies are naturally more expensive than single-trip policies due to the amount of coverage included, but vary according to geographical locations included. If you're planning to participate in extreme sports and activities, you may need to take out extra cover.

Backpackers' travel insurance

Also known as 'extended trip insurance', backpackers' travel insurance provides specialised cover for travellers moving through multiple countries as part of a longer trip.

Usually, this type of policy covers you for between one and 18 months, making it ideal for gap-year travel. In some cases, backpackers' travel insurance* might include adventure activities, although high-risk sports like skydiving are usually excluded.

This type of cover may also include working abroad, travel between multiple continents and the option to temporarily return home without affecting your protection.

Business travel insurance

If you're travelling for work, you can add business travel insurance to your standard travel insurance policy for additional specialist protection whilst you're away.

As well as providing standard protections, business travel insurance covers loss, theft or damage to your laptop, phone and other work belongings (high-value tech may require additional coverage), as well as cover for business interruptions and company money that's lost or stolen.

It may also provide protection for work-related legal disputes and replacement employee cover if you're unable to travel.

Cruise travel insurance

Booking a cruise? Purchasing cruise travel insurance is highly recommended, as most standard travel insurance policies don't include cruise-specific coverage.

Taking out specialised cruise cover will see you covered during unfortunate events such as missed port stops, lost baggage, cabin confinement, emergency evacuation, trip cancellations and any medical care that may be required onboard.

Gadget cover while travelling

Gadget cover provides protection for your devices whilst you're away, covering loss, theft and damage for everything from smartphones and laptops to tablets, cameras and portable gaming devices.

This type of insurance is sometimes included as a built-in benefit for your existing travel insurance, but is mostly available as an optional add-on. Always check the maximum claim limit on your policy before purchasing.

Winter sports travel insurance

If you're hitting the slopes, winter sports travel insurance provides standard travel cover as well as insurance for everything you need to ski and snowboard with confidence, including ski pass refunds, equipment damage and piste closures. Selected policies may also include off-piste skiing.

Please note that some policies may limit protection for hired versus owned gear, and injuries caused as a result of risky behaviour are usually excluded from cover.

Medical travel insurance

Medical travel insurance covers medical emergencies whilst you're abroad. As medical care can be expensive in foreign countries, this type of cover is highly recommended for things like hospital stays, doctor visits and dental emergencies. Most policies also include 24/7 medical assistance and emergency evacuations.

Please note that pre-existing medical conditions are not typically covered unless previously declared and approved. It's therefore important that you're honest in your application, as even undisclosed minor conditions can affect your claim.

Family travel insurance

Travelling with kids? Family travel insurance is a popular choice, typically covering two adults and children in one single policy. The cover can be single-trip or multi-trip, and all members usually need to travel together for the protection to apply.

Please note that stepchildren and non-relatives are usually not covered unless otherwise specified. Always check the details of your policy before travelling.

Group travel insurance

If you're travelling as part of a group of 10 or more people, it's often easier and cheaper to take out a group travel insurance policy, which covers everyone for the same trip in a single plan.

As part of the conditions, everyone must travel to and from the same place for group travel cover to apply. Some insurance companies may also set a maximum group size. Always double-check that coverage is provided per individual rather than shared across the group.

Over 70s' travel insurance

For travellers aged 70 and above, there are specialist travel insurance policies, which provide tailored medical cover and emergency support for injuries and illnesses while travelling abroad.

This type of policy typically comes with higher premiums, with prices increasing the older the traveller, so it's always worth shopping around and comparing prices.

Single or multi-trip options are available, and any pre-existing medical conditions must be declared before travelling.

FAQs

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, travel insurance is highly recommended, especially if you're travelling abroad. This way, you're financially protected if anything goes wrong on your trip.

Travel insurance* should ideally be purchased as soon as possible after you've booked your holiday so that you're covered in case you need to cancel or amend your trip before you leave. At the very minimum, travel insurance should be purchased before you depart.

How do I make a claim?

If you need to claim your travel insurance, you'll need to refer to your policy and follow the instructions from there. It's recommended that you make a note of your travel insurer's emergency contact details before you travel so that you know who to contact in case of an incident while you're abroad.

What does standard travel insurance cover?

Most standard travel insurance policies cover emergency medical expenses, lost, stolen or damaged luggage, travel delays, trip cancellations or curtailments and personal liability.

If you're travelling against government advice or you're involved in an incident concerning drugs or alcohol, you will usually not be covered. You're also not usually covered for unattended baggage and undeclared known pre-existing medical conditions.

What pre-existing medical conditions do I need to declare?

When purchasing travel insurance, you'll need to declare any existing health issues so that your cover and quote can be tailored accordingly. The general rule is that if you've had symptoms, medication, tests, treatment or advice on a condition, you'll need to let your insurance company know. If you don't share this information, your policy and cover will likely be invalidated.

Some of the most common medical conditions that you'll need to disclose include cancer, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes, arthritis, gout, Crohn's disease, any heart conditions such as high cholesterol and blood pressure, and any mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression and eating disorders.

You'll also need to disclose details of any surgeries, treated broken limbs, any condition that you're awaiting test results for and information about any ongoing treatments.

Always be honest about your medical history; this way, you'll get peace of mind that you're covered if you do need to make a claim. Please note, not all insurers offer cover for pre-existing medical conditions.
