1. Portsmouth, Hampshire, England

Portsmouth is the port city that keeps on giving. There's so much to do here that one visit is unlikely to be enough, leaving you with plenty of excuses to return.

The biggest draw has to be Portsmouth Historic Dockyard*, which combines a wide variety of maritime attractions from HMS Victory* to the restored Tudor-era Mary Rose* warship.

You could easily spend more than a day wandering around the exhibits and taking part in activities such as a harbour tour by boat.

Further along Portsmouth Harbour, you'll find plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants, while Gunwharf Quays outlet is the place to pick up a designer bargain. The famous Spinnaker Tower, with its soaring glass Sky Walk, is a must on any trip to Portsmouth as it offers splendid views of the city, harbour and out to sea.

Given Portsmouth's strategic importance through the centuries, there's so much for history lovers to see. Just outside the city, you'll find sights such as Fort Brockhurst*, a circular, largely unaltered, Victorian-era defensive fort that was built to repel any French invasion.

Then there's ancient Portchester Castle*, said to be the best-preserved of the 'Saxon shore' forts and full of fun for all the family.

Out and about, the South Coast Wakepark offers expert wakeboarding lessons while RSPB Langstone Harbour is where you'll spy a significant variety of seabirds.

2. St Andrews, Fife, Scotland

The seaside town of St Andrews punches far above its weight. From its university, the oldest in Scotland and third oldest in the English speaking world, to its place in history as the Home of Golf, St Andrews offers a tempting array of indoor and outdoor activities situated on a beautiful stretch of Scotland's east coast.

Naturally, many visitors to St Andrews are keen to shout 'fore' from the fairway. As one of the most in-demand destinations for golfers, if you're planning a round, be sure to do your research and book as far ahead as possible.

The town's history is on display at St Andrews Museum and medieval St Andrews Cathedral, where you'll walk among the ruins of what was once the largest church in Scotland. Be sure to climb to the top of St Rule's Tower for views across the town and Fife.

A great way to get to know St Andrews that little bit better is on a tour and luckily there are plenty to choose from. There's the Old Course tour, food tours, ghost tours and, for kids, the self-guided St Andrews Spy Mission Treasure Trail.

Breath in the freshest of sea air on a brisk walk along the wide-open stretch of West Sands Beach and, if that's not enough, head on to Tentsmuir Forest. Here, walking trails weave between woodlands alive with birds and red squirrels and sand dunes that give way to seabirds at the shore.

3. Bournemouth, Dorset, England

The resort town of Bournemouth on the Dorset coast has been welcoming holidaymakers since the mid-19th century. Today, it artfully blends a nostalgic Victorian feel with more modern attractions ensuring there's something for all ages and interests.

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, located in an elaborate Italian-style villa, exhibits a fine collection of objects and artwork from the Victorian era.

Another example of the period is displayed across the long stretch of Green Flag-winning Victorian gardens, Lower, Central and Upper, that run through the town. Get to know the gardens on the circular Bournemouth Garden Tree Trail that includes stops at 12 types of tree including palms, pines and redwoods.

Bournemouth Pier is not just for summer. As well as playing the arcades at Pier Amusements you can scale as many as 28 different climbing walls at RockReef and daredevils can shoot along the world's first pier-to-shore zipline at PierZip.

Of course, if you wrap up well, there's a world of outdoor paths, trails and tours you can do in November as well. Hike sections of the South West Coast Path, hire an e-bike for a guided cycle along the cliff tops or follow the long winding promenade.

You'll get close to nature at nearby RSPB Arne, a magnificent expanse of heathland and beach, and Brownsea Island*, where red squirrels rule the roost. Meanwhile, Corfe Castle* and Christchurch Castle and Norman House* offer history within easy reach of Bournemouth.

4. Isle of Wight, South Coast, England

The Isle of Wight is a self-contained playground. From history and culture to nature and the many activities of the great outdoors, there's a huge variety of things to do, whatever the weather.

Over half of the island sits within the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), something which led to it becoming one of only seven UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in the UK.

This accreditation gives a nod to the importance that the island places on the environment, wildlife and sustainability, something you can't fail to notice when visiting this exceptionally beautiful destination.

A great place to delve into the island's diversity is at RSPB Brading Marshes, which reaches from the village of Brading to Bembridge Harbour. Countless species call this reserve home from buzzards and little egrets to woodpeckers and red squirrels.

Another way to experience the landscape is by following sections of the circular Isle of Wight Coastal Path, which meanders around the island for some 70 miles.

Enjoy the changing colours of the season at Mottistone Gardens and Estate, walk the Victorian-era ramparts of imposing Bembridge Fort or ride the cable car to see the famous chalky stacks of the Needles from the Needles Landmark Attraction.

Families should head for Blackgang Chine, the UK's oldest amusement park with rides and adventure playgrounds to keep youngsters entertained all day.

5. Eastbourne, East Sussex, England

Much like Bournemouth, Eastbourne's rise to fame came during the Victorian period as people discovered the joys of the great British seaside. The seafront villas that line the promenade and the 19th-century pier are testament to this.

While crowds still descend on its long stretch of coast in summer, there's also plenty to do in the out-of-season months. The Towner Eastbourne is a treasure trove of contemporary artworks, while the Eastbourne Redoubt is one of only three surviving Napoleonic-era fortresses in the UK.

Pound the pavements of the town on the Blue Plaque Trail, which combines a walking tour with a dash of heritage as it highlights 17 of the greatest residents to have either lived or worked in this coastal resort from Charles Dickens to Ernest Shackleton. The Eastbourne Lifeboat Museum delves into the history of the RNLI in the town.

Located close to the southeastern tip of the South Downs National Park, Eastbourne is well situated to make the most of the natural landscape, be it by hiking or cycling. Cast your eyes on the famous red and white striped lighthouse at Beachy Head or climb the cliffs at Seven Sisters National Park.

Eastbourne is also a great base from which you can visit sites such as ancient Pevensey Castle*, which dates in parts from the 4th century, as well as nearby towns like buzzing Brighton, historic Hastings and Lewes.

6. New Forest, Hampshire, England

From the wilds of the national park, which incorporates everything from heathland to estuaries, scenic towns such as Brockenhurst, award-winning attractions and an ample selection of activities, it's simply bursting with things to do.

Delve into the history of the motor industry at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, an all-encompassing day out with more than 280 vehicles, a monorail, gardens, exhibitions and so much more. Another family favourite is Paultons Park where Peppa Pig World* delights young superfans.

The New Forest is renowned for its local produce from freshly grown veg to jams and cheeses. Head to Vibrant Forest Brewery for a tour and tasting of the local beer or New Forest Cider to raid the farm shop for appley goods.

For all of the museums and galleries, it's hard to beat lacing up your boots and immersing yourself in nature. The New Forest National Park is crisscrossed with walking trails, while the seaside offers everything from thrilling watersports to wildlife boat trips from Lymington.

If birdwatching is your thing, head for the North Solent National Nature Reserve (NNR), where a mix of heath, wood, grass and marshland create habitats for all sorts of wildlife, including migratory birds in winter such as flocks of geese and teal.

7. Plymouth, Devon, England

Plymouth is a lively port city in Devon, southwest England. Any visit here will be filled with the joys of the sea from learning about the city's maritime heritage and marine life to dining on the freshest seafood going. It also boasts a burgeoning creative scene and easy access to the great outdoors.

The heart of Plymouth is the Barbican and Sutton Harbour. Here, many of the town's oldest and newest attractions can be found. Think winding narrow lanes, cobbled streets and countless listed Tudor and Jacobean buildings, many of which house indy cafés, galleries, bars and shops.

Historic sights include The Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World in 1620 and Black Friars Distillery, the oldest working distillery in England where Plymouth Gin has been produced since 1793.

A more modern addition is the National Marine Aquarium, the UK's largest, which is run by the Ocean Conservation Trust and committed to educating people about the importance of the ocean and its inhabitants.

Take in the main sights by following the one-mile Sutton Harbour Heritage Trail before heading to the city's latest cultural hit, The Box, a major museum and art gallery with thousands of objects from ancient Egypt to the present day.

If you want a good leg stretch, tackle sections of the South West Coast Path, which snakes along Plymouth's shoreline. Alternatively, make for a hike in Tamar Valley AONB or nearby Dartmoor National Park.

8. Lindisfarne, Northumberland, England

For an experience like no other listed here, you can't beat a trip to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. This most sacred of ancient tidal islands lies just off the Northumberland coast and is part of the Lindisfarne NNR.

The island has long dealt with extremes from the earliest periods of the vicious Viking raids that occurred here to the fierce natural elements that continue to ravage the island's shifting sand dunes and marshland today.

The island gained significance in 635 CE when Lindisfarne Priory* was founded and the later Lindisfarne Gospels, the finest of holy manuscripts, was created here in the 8th century.

Lindisfarne Castle*, originally a defensive fort, followed in the Tudor period before being transformed into the grand Edwardian holiday home it is now. The Lindisfarne Heritage Centre is the place to dive into this history in more detail.

Lindisfarne is, unsurprisingly, much-loved not only by the devout and history aficionados but walkers and bird lovers too. Follow the Pilgrim's Way from the village of Beal across the causeway at low tide (be sure to check the tide times and local advice), before traversing the island's NNR Nature Trail. Take your binoculars to spy on seasonal residents including waders and wildfowl such as geese.

Back on the mainland, there's plenty to keep you occupied from exploring the Northumberland Coast AONB and visiting castles such as Dunstanburgh*, Edlingham* and Warkworth* to losing yourself in the Northumberland National Park - stargazing at Kielder Observatory a top activity.

9. London, England

The UK's capital, London, is a truly year-round destination. There is always something going on, from the theatres of the West End, live music and comedy shows to in-demand exhibitions, street food markets and themed festivals.

Just some annual events that take place each November include the London Jazz Festival and the Lord Mayor's Show.

Of course, the world-famous museums are eternally appealing - the London Transport Museum and British Museum personal favourites - as are attractions such as The View from The Shard*, the London Eye* and Kew Gardens.

Wandering through the Royal Parks is a great (free) way to see the beautiful colours of autumn, while a stroll down Oxford Street and a stop at Selfridges is an indulgence every visitor should enjoy at least once. Look for tucked-away St Christopher's Place to take your pick of restaurants for a stylish bite to eat.

An unexpectedly rural day out can be found at the London Wetland Centre where you're likely to see numerous migrant wading birds such as black-tailed godwits, green sandpipers and greenshanks as well as wintering ducks like teal and wigeon. Do check to see what's on as there are often activities for younger children.

10. Cambridge, East Anglia, England

The university town of Cambridge offers the perfect bite-sized break in late autumn. Quaint and compact, Cambridge is super easy to navigate and it won't take you long to tick off the major sights, be it on foot or by hired bicycle.

To truly get to know the town, book a guided university tour, which will take you behind the scenes of colleges and enlighten you with stories from real-life students.

You won't be able to miss Cambridge's star attraction, the gothic King's College Chapel. Construction began on this mighty chapel in the 15th century and today it remains home to impressive stained glass windows and the world's largest fan-vaulted ceiling.

Wrap up for a walk around the Cambridge University Botanic Garden. This collection of beautifully landscaped gardens blends diverse woodland areas with rock gardens, meadows and seasonal patches such as the autumn garden, which vibrantly beams red and orange by November.

The Fitzwilliam Museum is the place for art and antiquities while Kettle's Yard gallery is where you'll find an exceptional collection of artwork.

Mill Road is the city's coolest address where street art and indy boutiques meet, while the central market is an ever-changing collection of stalls offering fresh food and local produce.

There's plenty to see in the surrounding countryside too. Why not visit the gardens and working farm of Wimpole Estate* or the Jacobean-style house and watermill at Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill*?

Aviation enthusiasts should pencil in a date with IWM Duxford, Britain's largest museum of its kind located at historic Duxford Aerodrome, which was initially used by the RAF during WWI.
