What you pack for Bulgaria depends on which part of the country you plan to visit, and when. On the Black Sea Coast, you can find yourself basking in Mediterranean-type temperatures in the summer, while winter could leave you shivering in the face of icy winds from Russia. Although coastal winters are largely mild, they can suddenly be interrupted by cold spells ferocious enough to freeze the mighty River Danube.

Even in the summer, hot, sunny days on the coast can suddenly give way to squalls and thunderstorms with torrential rain and even hail. Inland from the coast, you can expect warm to hot summers and cold winters. Up in the mountains, summer temperatures are cooler but sunshine is plentiful; winters are cold, crisp and snowy.
