Afghanistan weather overview

Afghanistan is a largely mountainous country and, in its higher reaches, wintry conditions prevail throughout the year. On the lower ground of its southwest and northwest borders, summers are very sunny, hot and dry with extremely high temperatures; along its southwest border with Iran, the heat is exacerbated by dusty desert winds.

Winters are severe with substantial rainfall from December to March. In the mountains, summers are sunny and warm, winters are harsh and the heaviest rainfall comes in spring.

What to pack for Afghanistan weather

Pack carefully for a trip to Afghanistan: light summer clothing should include a hat to protect against heat and dust. In the winter, take very warm clothes and a warm hat, and remember to pack rainwear. Women should respect the Islamic dress code.
