Bali overview

From June to September in Bali, there's less humidity, more sunshine, blue skies and cooler temperatures, at least by a couple of degrees. It is also the time of year when there are noticeably more flowering trees and shrubs in bloom.

Bali weather is warm to hot at all times of the year with a Southern Hemisphere summer wet season and a winter dry season. The dry season is slightly cooler and less humid than the wet season and, although there is plenty of rain during the wet season, the sun also shines a lot particularly in the south of the island where most hotels and beaches are situated.

During the dry season you can expect daytime temperatures to reach 30°C and there is still humidity in the atmosphere - it is, after all, a tropical island - but heat and humidity is usually manageable at this time of year especially if there is a breeze blowing or the sun has set.

You can also expect almost 10 hours of sunshine a day in the dry season and days on end without any rain.

By contrast during the wet season, which lasts from the beginning of November to the end of March there are high levels of rainfall with up to 300mm (12 inches) a month. But it only rains at certain times of the day.

At higher elevations, rain tends to fall most afternoons while near the coast there can be days without any, even though clouds may build during the afternoon.

Mornings are generally sunny. In the south of the island at Kuta and Sanur, for example, even in January, which is considered to be the height of the wet season, there are still usually eight hours of sunshine a day, most of which occurs during the morning.

It's also less cloudy in the mountains at this time of day, so if you are planning to head off there make an early start.

The wet season is only a degree or two warmer than the dry season but it feels hotter because of higher heat and humidity.

Temperatures range on average from 23°C at night to 32°C during the day during the wet season, compared with 21°C to 30°C in the dry season. Sea temperatures also vary by the same amount being a very warm 29°C in the wet and 27°C in the dry.

Being so close to the equator Bali lies outside the track of tropical storms that form or pass by to the south, so there is no chance of a direct hit by one of these cyclones. However, between December and April there is a small chance that the island can be affected by a storm that comes within 500 to 600 kilometres, causing a few days of cloud and rain.

Bali is one of many islands in the volcanic chain that stretches across almost the full extent of Indonesia from the Andaman Sea in the north-west to the Arafura Sea in the east. Famous for its Hindu religious heritage and its artistic traditions Bali is a very beautiful fertile island, and Bali weather is very typically hot and tropical.
