|
Bag the prime seat on your flight, find a local who'll cook you dinner, save cash on car hire... Rhiannon Batten sees the world the smart way - Weather2travel.com - This site began life as a spin-off from shootingonlocation.com, a resource tool for film-makers. Now it covers the weather in pretty much any holiday destination you might be interested in. As well as quick, clear snapshots of average weather conditions in various destinations, there are some more fun tools. "Hot or not?" for instance tells you where's currently hottest - and coldest - around the world and "When to travel" tells you which month is the best, climate-wise, to visit a given destination.

Check the temperature before you fly with weather2travel.com. With all the rain we've been enduring here at home this summer, you may be hankering after a blast of foreign sunshine and heat. But before you book, find out what the weather is likely to be in your chosen destination. A vastly more reliable source than the invariably sunny photos in holiday brochures is www.weather2travel.com, which provides detailed climate guides for thousands of cities and resorts around the world, based on average temperatures and rainfall over the last few decades. Strengths: The climate charts - which give an easy-to-digest, month-by-month snapshot of average daytime and night time temperatures, hours of sunshine, number of rainy days, humidity and even sea temperatures. Also useful is the "Holiday Planner" - it picks out destinations that meet your chosen criteria for sunshine, heat, lack of rain and sea warmth. Weaknesses: The up-to-date weather reports are for that day only. For these, you're better off turning to www.bbc.co.uk/weather for five-day forecasts, or www.weather.com for 10-day ones. Ratings: Inspiring 2/5, Useful 4/5, Easy to use 5/5

While trawling through the Travel Notes link submissions; trying to get the number in our inbox down from over a thousand, before I go away for Christmas and the New Year, I came across one site I'd really like to share with you all - www.weather2travel.comWeather 2 Travel. At first I opened the link with trepidation, expecting popular holiday resorts with Accu Weather maps embedded into the page and a list of hotels for each city, or a list of links to places on Weather Channel or Weather Underground. We already link to those sites (and others) in our Weather Directory, so I really wanted to see something different. Rather than show the current weather, this site uses a nice graphic approach to presenting yearly averages for: Maximum Day Temperature; Minimum Night Temperature; Hours of Sunshine; Number of Days with some Rain; Monthly Rainfall; Heat & Humidity / Chance of Frost; and UV Index (Sun Protection) for just about anywhere in the world - not just the popular tourist resorts. What really sold the site to me was the Holiday Planner feature where you can search for travel destinations based on the sort of weather you would like on your holiday. Just choose the month you wish to travel and at least one weather requirement. My search threw up Cairo for January, so that's the screenshot we've used in this post. Currently the search checks some 1,400 travel destinations, although they hope to increase this number soon. Let's hope so!

Using my Mystic Max like powers I can tell you that, right now, the sea temperature off the Maldives will be 28 degrees. Impressed? Well don't be - it was a less than cunning trick. In fact, all I really did was visit the very useful 'weather 2 travel' website. (Note to self: must get out more). http://www.weather2travel.com.

While there are plenty of places on the web to find worldwide weather info, this new meteorological site makes it very easy. You can search by destination by clicking on locations on a world map or, better still, by entering your travel dates and the sort of weather you fancy and see what the site comes up with. Whether the suggested destinations of Iran, Afghanistan or Libya for sunny weather in November are suitable is your call. The site also includes handy links to worldwide travel and health advice, national and regional tourism offices, and other weather and travel-related links. www.weather2travel.com Rating: 3 Stars.
