Indonesia Weather Summary

Indonesia, which comprises over 13,500 islands as well as the western part of New Guinea, has a tropical climate but conditions vary greatly from area to area. The larger islands, of which the best known are Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok and Borneo, are mountainous and volcanic with colder, rainy conditions prevalent in their upper reaches. In the lowlands, conditions are equatorial: warm, steamy and wet.

Rain falls throughout the year and intensity varies from region to region depending on whether it is brought by the north monsoon (November to March) or the south monsoon (May to September). Parts of Indonesia are the most thundery places in the world so this is not a place to make for if you're scared of storms!

That said, Indonesia is popular with the holiday trade because its rainy periods are interspersed with spells of bright, sunny weather: Bali has lashings of sunshine throughout the year. Temperatures and humidity are high on the coast where conditions can feel muggy and oppressive although sea breezes make life more tolerable. Inland conditions are cooler, especially on higher ground and at night.

What to Pack

Take light clothes and be prepared for rain whatever the time of year. Pack warmer attire if you are travelling away from the coast.
