4. Consider all inclusive

You could save more money by going all inclusive and paying for everything upfront. This way you're left to enjoy your holiday without worrying about extras costs, however, always make sure you know exactly what is and what isn't included to avoid any surprise charges when you get home.

5. Destinations

Pick your destination carefully, and really think about what it is you want from your break. See where is favourable currency wise to help your pounds go further. Also consider what you are after to entertain your children as some destinations are better equipped than others, with safari, water and theme parks just some of the attractions available. Popular October half term holiday destinations

October is a great time to go away as many families are happy to give the scorching heat and crowds of summer a miss, while still enjoying the warm and pleasant conditions both close to home and further away. 1. Dubai

  • Flight time: 8 hours
  • Daily high: 36°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 10
  • Sea temperature: 31°C

October is first sensible month after summer to visit once the insane heat has eased, something which is especially important for families with young children. Days are long and hot with perhaps a little high cloud, and the sea is very warm indeed. It's a great time to take on water sports or visit the likes of Wild Wadi Water Park, Aquaventure Waterpark or Dolphin Bay to swim with the creatures of the deep.

2. Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt

  • Flight time: 6 hours
  • Daily high: 28°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 9
  • Sea temperature: 26°C

Egypt's Sharm el Sheikh is a great destination that sun and pleasure seekers flock to. October is a lovely time to go as it's just after the searing heat of summer, with lower levels of heat and humidity and glorious long sunny days. The warm water is crystal clear and ideal for water sports, while there's also a real mix of things to keep children entertained such as kids' clubs at certain hotels, and day trips such as quad biking or even overnight camping in the desert.

3. Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

  • Flight time: 4.5 hours
  • Daily high: 24°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 7
  • Sea temperature: 22°C

Places in the Canary Islands tend to be undisputed year-round favourite with holidaymakers, and for good reason. In Tenerife, a long time love of Brits, it's warm with plenty of sunshine in October with only a slim chance of rain, although the sea can be a bit chilly. Cloud can build but it's generally warmer than some of the other islands. As well as enjoying the many beautiful beaches and Teide National Park, you'll find the family favourite Siam Park for a fun day out.

4. Cape Verde

  • Flight time: 6 hours
  • Daily high: 28°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 7
  • Sea temperature: 26°C

Sitting 900 miles south of the Canaries and 400 miles west of Africa is the archipelago of Cape Verde, and October is one of the best times to visit. Temperatures, are very warm but pleasant, rarely falling below 22°C at night. The sea is also an inviting temperature, although thanks to the prevailing wind, it's not that calm. Stick to the west side of popular islands such as Boa Vista or Sal, where it's likely to be more sheltered during the October half term holiday.

5. Orlando, USA

  • Flight time: 9 hours
  • Daily high: 27°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 7

Orlando attracts many families keen to experience the thrills of theme park life. October is a fine time to go, with warm weather and just the odd passing shower. There's a small chance of a tropical storm affecting Orlando during the October half term holiday but the risk is really very small.

Popular February half term holiday destinations

The February half term break is a great time to go away, especially if you're craving some late winter sun. Here's our pick of some top family friendly destinations with great weather for you this February half term holiday:

1. Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain

  • Flight time: 4.5 hours
  • Daily high: 20°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 7
  • Sea temperature: 18°C

By the middle of February, Gran Canaria is the greenest it gets all year, making it perfect for seeing some of the countryside. It's not not too hot, but there is usually a good day's sunshine aside from passing clouds. Head to Palmitos Park to see monkeys, reptiles and more, or visit Sioux City's wild west ways. There's also Cocodrilo Park, Los Corralillos, for getting up close to crocs, tigers and more.

2. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

  • Flight time: 9 hours
  • Daily high: 28°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 9
  • Sea temperature: 26°C

For something a little exotic, head to the Caribbean shores of the Dominican Republic. Here, the weather in February is very pleasant with hot daytimes, warm evenings that dip no lower than around 21°C, and inviting seas. There's a chance you might see some rain, but only the kind that moves on quickly. For families, as well as kids' clubs, pools and play grounds found at the many resorts on the coast there's also snorkelling, safaris, zip lining, boat trips and more.

3. Marrakech, Morocco

  • Flight time: 3.5 hours
  • Daily high: 20°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 7

This enchanting city is a delight for both children and adults, with new colours, scents and curiosities at every turn. In February, Marrakech is simply lovely and fresh, with warm days, cool nights and a good covering of sunshine. Do pack layers though, as the temperatures drops after sunset to around 8°C. As for things to do, on top of the range of exciting day trips to the Atlas Mountains, Ouzoud Falls, and more, there's also the the souk and beautiful Le Jardin Majorelle.

4. Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt

  • Flight time: 6 hours
  • Daily high: 21°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 9
  • Sea temperature: 21°C

Sticking with North Africa, Egypt's Sharm el Sheikh is a fab family holiday destination. February is a pleasant time to go before the real heat kicks in, with lower levels of heat and humidity and glorious long sunny days. The water is crystal clear but, although passable for some water sports, a little chilly for swimming, so you would want a hotel with a heated pool.

5. Dubai

  • Flight time: 8 hours
  • Daily high: 25°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 8
  • Sea temperature: 22°C

Dubai in February is, in many ways, much like the Canary Islands in summer. Day times are warm and evenings a little cooler at around 14°C. Unlike other times of the year, there's no heat and humidity,, a full day's sunshine, and only passing cloud. You may want to find a heated pool as the sea is fine for water sports but not ideal for full on swimming. As for things to do away from the beach there's the games and rides of SEGA Republic, and the amazing Lost Chambers Aquarium at Atlantis The Palm Dubai.

Popular May half term holiday destinations

May is a great time of year to go on holiday as it starts to warm up closer to home, but it's before the crowds set in for the summer. Here's our pick of some of the best accessible, family friendly destinations with great weather for your May half term holiday:

1. Marmaris, Turkey

  • Flight time: 4 hours
  • Daily high: 25°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 10
  • Sea temperature: 19°C

In Marmaris in May, you can expect very comfortable temperatures but bring a layer or two for evenings, which drop to 13°C. There's only low heat and humidity, but very high UV so remember the SPF for both young and older skin. While days see lots of sunshine, the sea is a little on nippy side as it hasn't had the chance to warm up properly by May, so a heated pool may be worthwhile. Families should head to Aqua Dream Water Park, go turtle watching, take a family day cruise, or try water sports such as banana boating, snorkelling and more.

2. Costa del Sol, Spain

  • Flight time: 3 hours
  • Daily high: 26°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 10
  • Sea temperature: 19°C

The Costa del Sol, with its main airport in Malaga, is warm and sunny in May, although sea temperatures are a little chilly. There's also a great variety in terms of accommodation and things to do, from the beaches and outdoor activities to water parks such as Aqualand Torremolinos, and other theme parks including Selwo Aventura safari park and Selwo Marina sea life centre complete with dolphins and sea lions.

3. Majorca, Spain

  • Flight time: 2.5 hours
  • Daily high: 23°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 9.5
  • Sea temperature: 19°C

Palma is a popular destination year round thanks to Majorca's natural beauty and easy pace of life, making it a great May half term holiday option. It's a touch cooler than mainland Spain in May, but there's still plenty of sunshine. Majorca has so many stunning spots with plenty of places to explore, and if you hire a car the options are endless. For kids there's the Ostrich Farm and Safari Zoo, as well as the Palma Aquarium, go karting and more.

4. Crete, Greece

  • Flight time: 4 hours
  • Daily high: 23°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 10
  • Sea temperature: 19°C

Crete is not only Greece's largest island but also one of its more diverse with so many things to see and do. Families visiting in the May half term holiday can expect warm days with cooler evenings, and just the slightest chance of a few drops of rain. There's no heat and humidity to worry about but there is very high UV. Like other destinations in the Med at this time, the sea is still little too cold to fully enjoy. Instead, explore the old town of Chania or the markets of Heraklion, while older kids could hike the Samaria Gorge. There's also the AquaWorld Aquarium and Aqua Plus Water Park, both in Hersonissos.

5. Cyprus

  • Flight time: 5 hours
  • Daily high: 29°C
  • Daily hours of sunshine: 11.5

It too is beautifully hot and sunny in May and it's also that little bit quieter than in the months that follow. Take your children to the Camel Park, get them involved in snorkelling, or think about bowling. There's lots to keep both big and little ones happy in Cyprus.
