A bit about Madeira

The archipelago of Madeira is one of two autonomous Portuguese regions (as well as the Azores), made up of Madeira island, Porto Santo and the Desertas islands. A true year-round destination, it's located around 250 miles north of Tenerife, and benefits from comfortable conditions, with temperatures never dipping much lower than 18°C during the day in winter months.

Its position in the eastern edge of the Atlantic Ocean gives it just the subtropical climate needed to grow a wealth of exotic fruit, flowers and more. It's a peaceful, laid back place with most of the action packed into the capital, Funchal. Given its popularity, those after cheap holidays to Madeira in 2017/2018 have loads of choice when it comes to booking, with a mix of large and smaller providers offering a range of holidays to the island.

Walking holidays in Madeira

One of the best ways to experience the beauty, scenery and horticulture of Madeira is on foot, hiking the island's extensive levadas. These levadas are covered channels that disperse rainwater around the island, from the orchards, vineyards and plantations to the hydroelectric power station.

As well as playing a vital role in irrigation, the levadas provide unrivalled walking opportunities for tourists and locals of all abilities. As such, keen hikers are often looking for cheap walking holidays in Madeira, hoping to explore the network of trails that zigzags for 1,350 miles over 23 official walks throughout the archipelago.

Top levada walks in Madeira

You'll find the levadas vary greatly in terms of difficulty on your walking holiday in Madeira in 2017/2018. Some are easy strolls, others more challenging hikes. It's best to do your research either before you go, or by talking to a local when you're there to find out which routes will best suit you. Five well-known levada walks include:

  • Vereda dos Balcões (PR11) - easy, less than two miles, one hour round trip
  • Camacha Levada dos Tornos - easy, 10 miles, up to five hours round trip
  • Levada do Caldeirão Verde (PR9) - medium, nine miles, up to five hours round trip
  • Rabacal Levada das 25 Fontes e Risco (PR6) - medium, nearly six miles, four hours round trip
  • Caminho do Pinaculo e Folhadal (PR17) - difficult, 11 miles, up to seven hours round trip

Protected reserves and parks

Did you know that two thirds of Madeira is a designated nature reserve? Encouragingly, the authorities in Madeira work hard to protect and conserve the landscape and varied indigenous species of the island.

This means that, while you're free to explore many of these areas for yourself, it's good to be aware of what they're trying to do, and play your part - i.e. leave nothing behind! Some of the reserves and parks you can visit on cheap walking holidays in Madeira include:

  • Laurissilva Forest Nature Reserve - largest surviving area of laurel forest, designated UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, home to various native plants and animals
  • The Ecological Park - 1,000 hectares rich in flora and fauna offering incredible views of the surrounding landscape, located in Pico do Arieiro, north of Funchal
  • Ribeiro Frio Forest Park - north of Funchal, home to beautifully curated gardens and a selection of walking paths, some leading deep into the Laurissilva Forest
  • Queimadas Forest Park - west of Santana, pretty park surrounded by Laurissilva Forest, with many paths and picnic benches
  • Garajau Nature Reserve - marine park located southeast of Funchal with diverse sea life including manta rays and seahorses; great for amateur diving

Funchal is Madeira's beating heart, the capital city with over five centuries of history behind it, and a must visit on any cheap holiday to Madeira. As a major stopping point for cruise liners, Funchal has quite a transient tourist population coming and going day-to-day. Other resorts in Madeira

Funchal is without doubt the largest and most frequented destination in Madeira, however, when you're searching for cheap holidays to Madeira in 2017/2018, you will come across a number of other exciting and enchanting places to stay. Just a few of these include:

Canico de Baixo

Much like Funchal, there are two distinct areas to this town: the old centre up high with its historic churches and windy steep streets that lead down to the newer, more modern additions, such as stylish hotels and thriving marina.

If you book a cheap holiday to Canico de Baixo, Madeira in 2017/2018, you will find plenty of places to sunbathe and swim here, they're just more of the rocky and pebbly variety. If you this doesn't suit, stop by the sea water lido, complete with umbrellas and a lifeguard. It's also ideally located to visit Funchal or embark on a day's diving at Garajau Nature Reserve.

Calheta

Calheta is much-loved by holidaymakers after a bit of everything. Located on the southwest coast of Madeira, it's home to a selection of ornate old churches, lovely marina and two delightfully sandy man-made beaches, just what you want on a cheap holiday to Madeira in 2017/2018.

For the crafty, there's a contemporary arts centre perched on the cliff above the town, which hosts numerous exhibitions and performances, but if you fancy getting a real taste of the area, sample some of the locally made white rum, after a stroll around the working distillery of Engenho da Calheta.

Machico

When explorers first set foot on Madeira in 1420, they landed at Machico, making it the island's first capital in 1440. It may have lost that title to Funchal in 1508, but Machico remains a popular place as the island's second busiest destination, and a great day trip on cheap holidays to Madeira in 2017/2018. This historic town is set in a small and pretty bay surrounded by hills, ensuring it has that trademark Madeira look.

When visiting Machico, take a wander out to Pico do Facho point, where locals used to light torches to warn of approaching pirates. There are also a number of levada walks which pass through or depart from here, as well as a restaurants lined promenade and sheltered beach. The beach is mix of sand and pebbles, watched over by a lifeguard, with facilities such as toilets and showers are on hand.

If you fancy diving in the Garajau Nature Reserve on your cheap holiday to Madeira, head to Anthia Diving Centre in Machico, where experienced instructors lead tours around the protected coast. There's also the Santo Serra Golf club if you feel like squeezing in a round or two.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz sits on Madeira's eastern coast, close to the airport. It's a delightful town, ideal for families and those hoping to relax with plenty of amenities nearby. The sixteenth century church sits at the centre, while the pebbly shores of Palmeiras Beach attract both locals and tourists a like. Here you'll find a kids' pool, beach toys and a lifeguard. For something a bit different on your cheap holiday to Madeira in 2017/2018, head to the Aquaparque Santa Cruz, with its flumes, slides and fast flowing river - a great day out for all.

Porto Santo island holidays

Porto Santo lies around 25 miles north of Madeira island, and offers something quite different to holidaymakers. Those booking cheap holidays to Porto Santo, Madeira in 2017/2018 can either fly to the tiny island's international airport, or travel via Madeira itself, either by a short 15-minute flight or a two and a half hour ferry ride.

It may be considered Madeira's little sibling, but Porto Santo has a big character of its own, with spectacular scenery both inland and by the coast. Jagged volcanic peaks protrude upwards, while rich green walks snake all over, down to the dunes and the long ribbon of glorious white sandy beach, unlike anything on Madeira, that stretches unbroken for just over six miles. There's also a well groomed golf course, and a new area by the port brimming with trendy bars and resident DJs, especially during the summer months.

The real benefit of visiting Porto Santo is that it remains pretty undeveloped. You'll find places to stay on cheap holidays to Madeira in 2017/2018, but not the same volume or size as in Funchal. It's still quite traditional, with picturesque whitewashed villas, quaint windmills, vineyards and dinky squares. In the island's only town of Vila Baleira you can easily lose yourself in the cafes, which offer the freshest local cuisine and seafood.

Two big attractions in Porto Santo include the Wine Harvest Festival, which takes places at the end of August each year - look out for wine tasting, wine making demonstrations and more as the proud locals showcase their produce - and the three-day Christopher Columbus Festival at the beginning of September, which celebrates the life of this intrepid explorer.

Whether you come to Porto Santo for the day, or decide to stay for your whole trip, you won't be disappointed on your cheap holiday to Madeira in 2017/2018.
