Aden Al Ghaydan Al Hudaydah Sana Shibam Socotra
Over 3,000 years of history has left Yemen with a unique cultural heritage, evident in the architecture and atmosphere of the towns and villages. Its historical importance was based on the frankincense and myrrh trade and its strategic importance on the Arabian Peninsula, being on the sea route to the Orient.
Today, it is still very much a tribal society with many rural settlements consisting of reed-huts. The houses in the capital city of Sana, are built from mountain rock and many are over 400 years old. This ancient walled city is one of the oldest preserved medinas in the Arab world.
A narrow coastal strip around the country has the steep imposing mountains as an impressive backdrop. The Red Sea coast is sunny, hot, and humid all year, but can become oppressive during the summer months. The Gulf of Aden coast is clipped by the summer Southwest Monsoon, bringing welcome rain, cloud, and mist from mid-June to mid-September.
Much of the interior is mountainous with the highest and most ruggedly spectacular peaks down the western side of the country. This is also where thundery showers are most prevalent, usually developing during the afternoons in the spring and late summer. Sufficient rain falls to support tropical evergreen forests on the lower slopes and cultivated tropical fruit. Daytime temperatures can become very hot, particularly during the summer. Night-time temperatures inland tend to be comfortable, even cool during the winter.
There have been a number of terrorist incidents in recent years in Yemen and advice should be taken before travelling there.
