Mykonos beaches: 10 of the Greek island's best
In the heart of Greece's Cycladic islands, Mykonos stands out as a whitewashed island paradise that continues to attract visitors from all over the globe with its cosmopolitan nightlife, fine accommodation and historic sightseeing options.
It also helps that the island is blessed with some of the most lovely and pristine beaches in the country. Mykonos is ringed with turquoise waters and sandy and rocky shorelines that are set in idyllic landscapes. There's a perfect Mykonos beach for every beach style.
1. Agios Sostis Beach
The Cycladic summer winds tend to hit the northern part of the island, but on calm days Agios Sostis is the perfect place to experience complete calm where you'll find yourself in tune with Greek island nature. The beautiful sandy stretch is most likely to be crowd free since it lacks lounge chair rentals, restaurants and beach bars.
2. Agios Stefanos Beach
Named after the little chapel of Saint Stephen which was built at one end of the bay, Agios Stefanos is within close proximity to Mykonos town. This soft family-friendly beach is a favourite with kids who love the shallow coastline; it's also popular in the early evenings when the sun sets, offering views across Mykonos town and the uninhabited neighbouring islands of Delos and Rinia.
3. Panormos Beach
Located north of Mykonos town, this yellow sand beach tucked between green hills offers two environments. At one end there's an atmospheric beach bar and restaurant that rents out comfy sunbeds, serves up cocktails and plays loud and lively mixes. At the other end there is just the beach and the view of the island's tranquil turquoise seas.
4. Psarou Beach
This white sand beach is the island's VIP destination, where there always seems to be a series of yachts moored in its turquoise seas. It's where the famous Nammos Restaurant organises daily summer beach parties where, if you reserved a table, you'll find yourself wanting to dance on it like everyone else around you. As for grabbing that large posh sunbed that seems empty, don't bother - it's been secured in advance, likely for the entire summer, by someone who knows someone.
5. Platis Gialos Beach
Platis Gialos is a colorful, friendly, small beach town that's bustling with holidaymakers and beach lovers. Several hotels and sea view restaurants hug the golden coastline that features shallow waters popular with families and young children. The beach itself is lined with sunbed rentals, beach cafes and water sports facilities.
6. Paraga Beach
Ever since the smooth, sandy and once secluded Paraga Beach attracted the hippie crowd in the 70s, it has continued to evolve as one of the great places to party on the island. It has several beach bars that pump dance music throughout the day, while the area around the beach features all kinds of accommodation that typically attract a young, active crowd.
7. Paradise Beach
Paradise is the most famous party beach in Mykonos. If you're within walking distance of it, simply follow the music which overtakes the crowds from day to night. It attracts a diverse, mostly young, international group looking to let loose from dusk till dawn.
8. Super Paradise Beach
The fabulously hip, trendy and famous join together to create the lively party atmosphere on Super Paradise. Throngs of beach goers either lounge on sunbeds or find themselves dancing on top of the beach bar table tops - if there's room.
9. Agrari Beach
Simply pretty and peaceful, Agrari is known for its sparkling turquoise sea that gently meets a stretch of pebbly sand beach - a swimmer's paradise - with a few hotels and restaurants dotted nearby. Agrari beach reaches into neighboring Elia Beach, and together they offer a calm, peaceful atmosphere surrounded by barren rocky hills the Cycladic island is known for.
10. Kalo Livadi Beach
South of Ano Mera, the second largest town in Mykonos, you'll find Kalo Livadi beach where a calm, sophisticated and family friendly vibe exists. Kalo Livadi, which translates to good valley, is literally named for its location at the end of a long valley. However, it's the beach's picturesque and shallow shoreline that attracts visitors, and that's why it continues to be popular with families with young children. There's also a water sports area where you can rent a paddle boat, kayak or similar.
