Ibiza for couples: tips for a romantic getaway

The White Isle has a reputation for clubbing, nightlife and, of course, beaches but there is a softer side with an inspiring selection of places to go and romantic things to do.

Step away from the built-up resorts and bar action and you'll find another Ibiza with pine trees, coastal walking trails and scenic rural landscapes dotted with quaint villages and white churches straight out of a picture postcard.

In fact, the beaches and laid back vibe of the island are what first attracted visitors in the 1960s and Europe's answer to California's hippies flocked here to soak up the natural attractions on offer.

The rugged coastline has dozens of sandy beaches and if you stick to the north and more remote parts of the island you can enjoy seclusion and romance. If, however, you're hankering for some action, Europe's best nightlife is just a short drive away!

Activities for couples

You can simply turn up at Ibiza Town bay and take a boat trip around Es Vedra, the mysterious rock, which is the third most magnetic spot on earth. Take a day trip to Formentera to experience the pristine beaches and serene atmosphere of this unspoiled island.

Hang out in the northern part of the island in the villages of San Joan, San Juan, and Santa Agnes or head south and see the village of San Jose - Ibiza's rural villages are achingly romantic and make a delightful place to spend quality time.

Top tip: hire a car for a day or more to discover beaches, bays, walking trails and remote villages at your own pace.

Explore the narrow, winding, steep cobbled streets of Ibiza Town's D'alt Vila (meaning 'High Town') and check out the magnificent views of the ocean. Spend some time in Santa Eularia which, along with Ibiza Town itself, is one of the best places for a couple to enjoy a memorable day out while on Ibiza.

Grab a bite to eat on the atmospheric Carrer de Sant Vincent, which is packed with eateries - try Es Rickshaw for Asian fusion cuisine or Daphne's for a taste of home.

Romantic restaurants

There are more amazing restaurants in Ibiza than you can possibly try in a one or even two-week holiday but here are some recommendations for places that will impress your partner and leave you with wonderful memories of your magical holiday.

It really is well worth the drive to Macao Café, Santa Gertrudis, a contemporary pizzeria and ristorante in this lovely inland village set geographically at the absolute heart of the island. Santa Gertrudis is the utter antithesis of what many holidaymakers think of when they imagine Ibiza - a dusty, sleepy place with a handful of small bars and restaurants, including this Mediterranean restaurant, known for its friendly service and wood-fired pizzas.

Casa Colonial is probably the most romantic restaurant on the island, whether you eat inside the refined yet cosy Finca warmed by the fire, or dine al fresco in the lush gardens surrounded by tropical plants, you'll be charmed by the setting. The menu is an impressive and unusual fusion of Thai and Mediterranean-French cuisine and, after dinner, you can enjoy the heavenly Asiatic cocktail garden.

If you're going all out to impress though, there's only one choice and that's the see-and-be-seen dining spot at Bambuddha Ibiza. It's a vast Asian-themed restaurant, bar and club, which has been pulling in Ibiza's locals and visitors for years. Here, you'll enjoy signature sushi and other oriental flavours amongst an impressive dark wood and gold-accented interior as the sounds of house music wash over you.

Ibiza's sunsets are world-famous and best enjoyed from the west coast. Book a table at Es Boldado in Playa Cala d'Hort (in the far south); the restaurant overlooks Es Vedra rock and serves fantastic seafood. On Sundays, join the hippies at Benirras beach and bring your bongos to drum in unison as the sun goes down.

Alternatively, Splash out at Hacienda Na Xamena, a sumptuous five-star hotel set on a clifftop in a peaceful part of northern Ibiza, and watch the sun sink into the sea from either the bar or restaurant.

Top tips for a romantic getaway

  • siestas: if you're here with your partner you might as well enjoy the decadence of going back to bed in the middle of the day; siestas apply in Ibiza as well as the rest of Spain - so don't expect to find much open mid-afternoon!
  • shopping: if you plan on showering your loved one with gifts from the island's shops, remember that the sales assistant may well want to see your passport or driver's license along with your credit card if you want to buy something, no matter how small; they often take this rule especially seriously in Ibiza.
  • nudist beaches: if you fancy getting an all-over tan with your other half in tow check out one of Ibiza's well-known nudist beaches; there are also areas designated areas for nudists for some beaches.
  • kilometres: an address in Spain is often expressed by its position on the road according to the kilometre markers, rather than its street number. So if you're driving to the address 3.5KM Santa Gertrudis it doesn't mean you should head to Santa Gertrudis, but check the road to Santa Gertrudis 3.5 kilometres outside of it - worth knowing if you're looking for a restaurant and don't want to get lost en route!
